Spotted this gem earlier today over at the excellent Baby Grandpa blog. The Stuyvestants is some really funky and sexy instrumental ish, incorporating the sounds and textures of ’70s Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn into a modern trip back in time. According to the group:
“The Stuyvesants” is a collaborative effort between music producer Allan Cole (Algorythm), and record collector Darien Victor Birks (Flwrpt). Both reside in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY. The two wanted to work together on a project where they could incorporate several of their talents, related to music and design. They wanted to do this under a moniker that would pay homage to the ’70s. The collaboration allowed them to do four major things, design, beat dig, produce amazing music, and simply have fun.
This is a free download so don’t sleep. These cats even did up some crisp looking tee’s, so if you are really feeling their free contribution to your musical collection support them and buy yourself some fresh “Stuyvestants” cotton.

One of hip-hop’s most beloved live acts, The Roots, have been rocking shows around the world since the early ’90s. From huge music festivals to small clubs to grand concert halls to college campuses, The Roots have been stunning fans with one of the most robust live shows in music today. Anyone who has seen or heard them perform live can testify to this. They aren’t just a rap group from Philly or Jimmy Fallon’s house band. The Roots are one of the great bands of the last 20 years, and their reputation as amazing musicians and performers reinforces that claim.
While Rock music has been battling concert bootlegs for 40+ years, concert bootlegs haven’t been nearly as prevalent in the hip-hop community. A few bands have released live albums (like MF Doom’s “Live From Planet X“) and occasional soundboard recordings of live shows do float around the torrents and blogs, but not on nearly the same scale as Rock music. However, this apparent “rule” of hip-hop doesn’t apply to The Roots. They have TheRootsLive.com, the online source for free, high-quality concert bootlegs.
Go check out the site and get your download on. I would recommend any of the Montreux Jazz Festival recordings (their 2003 performance is available here). Or just search around and listen to a random concert. It is bound to be good.
TheRootsLive.com has over 40 full concerts for download, all good quality, all free. They also feature a great history of the band, which you can read here.
And as always, support artists that you love. Buy their albums, go to their shows, maybe even watch the awful Jimmy Fallon show sometimes, if only to watch hip-hop royalty rock the stage like no other.

With opening tip-off just hours away, let’s celebrate the upcoming season with a hot new jam from the QN5 crew.
“This Year” features a sick beat from Kno, while Session and PackFM rock it over an accompanying montage of highlights from last season. I love the entire QN5 crew, and can’t wait to see Cunninlynguists in Bellingham, WA next month (Listen to their new single and pre-order their new album, Strange Journey Vol 2 here). But until then, let’s focus on some round ball. If you like the track, you can download it here.
R&S Predictions

Defensive Player: Dwight Howard
6th Man: Lamar Odom
ROY: Blake Griffin (even with the broken kneecap)

Nike is the king of marketing and promoting, especially when it comes to basketball. From Air Jordan to the Fun Police, they are always doing something to build a groundswell of interest in their latest kicks. This time, they harnessed the vibe of the early ’90s West Coast with the new “Hyperizers” music video to promote the Nike Hyperize.
Featuring Mo Williams, Kevin Durant, Rashard Lewis and Andre Iguodala and with a beat crafted by none other than DJ Quik (who makes a cameo in the video), the Hyperizers show that they are smooth both on and off the court. Honestly, if it was 1993 and this song came on the radio, I probably would have gone down to HMV and picked up the CD. This track is bangin’ and is hilarious to boot.
Check out more from the Hyperizers on their official site, where you can download the track, ringtones, wallpapers and all that jazz.

Good bad news from the Beasties the other day. Adam Yauch aka MCA aka Nathaniel Hornblower announced that he has cancer in his parotid gland and a lymph node. The good news is it’s a mild form of cancer that is both treatable and beatable. He’s in for surgery next week and the Doc assures him that his vocal chords will be out of harms way.
This unexpected diagnosis has caused the Beastie Boys to cancel their summer gigs, which were plenty. They were headlining many festivals including Lollapalooza in Chicago, All Points West in Jersey and the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in SF in anticipation of their latest record, Hot Sauce Committee, which is also being delayed.
R&S would like to give a shout out to Adam and his family as he deals with a bitch named Cancer. Kick it.
And peep the first single from Hot Sauce Committee, Too Many Rappers (with Nas), below:
Or download it here.
And go buy the remastered, special edition vinyl of Ill Communication.

As we have mentioned earlier on Rhymin’ & Stealin’, Pearl Jam is releasing their ninth studio album on September 20th. The album is entitled Backspacer, and the first single is “The Fixer”.
Mike McCready unveiled the song on the radio today. and R&S has come through with a downloadable rip for all the PJ fans out there who need something to tide them over until September.
Download “The Fixer”.
I really like this track, really upbeat and not too dated or grungy. It’s a great first single, and McCready even let out that this track was written by drummer Matt Cameron (formerly of Soundgarden). Just shows how many great songwriters these guys have in the band, everyone is capable of contributing something great.
In my opinion, these guys are the best American rock band of the last 30 years and here’s to hoping that “The Fixer” is the start of big things for Ed and the boys in ’09. And they are touring, so go check them out even if you have to sell a kidney. It is well documented that their live shows are some of the most entertaining and memorable ever. I have seen them three times and will go watch them kill it live every chance I get for the rest of my years.
As long as they keep busting out gems like “The Fixer”.
And don’t hate the players, hate the game. Support good artists.

Montreal’s DMC wunderkid, A-Trak, is set to release his newest mixtape March 31st on Thrive Records.
He has a new website which is set-up like an advent calendar, but instead of a new piece of chocolate goodness every day, you get exclusive A-Trak videos, downloads and album info.
He’s also released an 8 minute snippet of the mixtape, which you can download here.
From the sounds of the sample, A-Trak will have the dance floors going buck wild, a la his brother’s electro funk sensation Chromeo.
And on an even more positive note, it looks like after a couple year’s as Kanye West’s touring DJ, A-Trak has even managed to avoid the dreaded Kanye Wack disease. This puzzling malady is known to cause a rapid bloating of the person’s self-worth and an uncontrollable urge to put out wack music and self-proclaim it as “ahead of its time”. Anyone who ever told you that Kanye West is a great MC either lied to you or wouldn’t know an MC from a McChicken. He’s got a great resume production wise, but his skills on the mic are third-rate. Mini rant over.
Enjoy the new A-Trak and check him out if he comes through your city.

The Beastie Boys have released a re-mastered version of their classic sophomore LP, Paul’s Boutique. Click here to view the various packages available and pick-up your own copy. All orders also include a high quality digital download in your choice of format.
I wish I could justify picking up the $130 version with the 8 foot poster, but I had to settle for the standard LP edition. If you have the means, I highly recommend the deluxe edition, you will be the envy of all your friends when they see that 8 foot beauty in your pad.

Something about the Dirty South produces incredible variation and individuality among their hip-hop artists. From the groundbreaking Outkast, underground heroes CunninLynguists to crunk pimp Lil’ Jon, the South refuses to follow trends, instead blazing ferocious new ones.
Supreeme is another sterling example. Repping the ATL, Negashi, King Self and Dope Pope aka Tom Cruz make up the nucleus of a group that doesn’t give a shit about what other cats are doing. If the above video wasn’t enough evidence, peep their website. Hilarious.
Aside from their comedic stylings, they are actually producing some A-1 quality hip-hop. To make things even better, they are given much of it away for free. Here are three of their albums, straight from the artists themselves. Get your download on with a clear conscience.

Last week we dropped the first Rhymin’ & Stealin’ mixtape, an ode to the fellas and what they really want for Valentine’s Day. I was chatting about Valentine’s with a friend and she mentioned how she was going to the shooting range on Saturday with her girls… and was bringing along some photos of her ex’s for target practice. Aside from that being a great way for a girl to spend Valentine’s Day, it got us both thinking of a female version of the anti-Valentine’s mix. Next thing I knew, I had whipped together 14 songs that will be sure to have the girls loading up fresh clips, forgetting all the dudes that dogged them and having pillow fights all through the night.
So ladies, without further ado…

For all those who love the storytelling element of hip-hop, here’s a real treat. Kenzo Digital has put together ”City of God’s Son“, an “experimental hip-hop opera” which combines an ill soundtrack with a complete visual art dimension (which will be unveiled in NYC this summer). This is no “Carmen: A Hip Hopera“. Here’s what Kenzo had to say about his visionary project:
“City of God’s Son” is an experimental hip-hop opera starring Nas, Jay Z, Ghostface, Biggie Smalls, Raekwon, Samuel Jackson, Delroy Lindo, and Laurence Fishburne. It is a crime drama/coming of age tale of three fictitious characters growing up in a crime ridden city in a jungle. This project explores the icon of the gangster in modern media, and weaves musical history and gangster film history into an operatic music based story of brotherhood and survival. An homage to 90’s New York hip-hop, “City of God’s Son” is the redefinition of the remix. Featuring legendary soul singer Joe Bataan.
You can download the one hour audio track for free here.
Listen to it straight through, it’s dynamite. Joe Bataan kills it as the narrator.
And if you are in the Big Apple this summer, be sure to check it out live. Support innovation.

The most slept-on group in the rap game are back at it. Cunninlynguists, aka Kno, Deacon the Villain and Natti, continue to build on their four previous (and stellar) albums, and if this first single is any indication their next batch is going to be hot fire. Called “Never Come Down”, the track features Kno’s exquisite production over rhymes dealing with a problem we have all faced at one time or another… getting too high. Classic stuff right here. These guys are the best rap group to emerge this decade and I pray they roll through Van City again, to make up for the meathead bouncers that robbed us of admission last time through.
Here’s the deets on their new DOUBLE album, straight from the horses mouth over at QN5:
Respectively entitled Strange Journey – Volume One and Strange Journey – Volume Two, both full-length discs will be interconnected efforts dropped within months of each other and built around the concept of touring and travel. Both will feature completely new, original material. Previously announced guests for the project include Killer Mike, J-Zone,Khujo Goodie and more.
And in case you didn’t figure it out, the track playing over the gassed up kid in the video above is “Never Come Down”. Fitting.

Aceyalone’s new album ‘Aceyalone and the Lonely Ones‘ drops March 31. The album is heavily influenced by Doo-wop. The first single, ‘the Way It Was ft. Bionik’ can be heard and downloaded here.
There aren’t many MC’s that could pull off an album like this without it sounding kind of hokey. Big Ace is a rare breed of MC. His skills are paralleled by only a few in the rap-game. His live show is no joke either. I finally got a chance to catch this cat last year at Richard’s and he rocked it. He may have supplanted Del as my favorite MC on the strength of that show. Either way, he’s in the top 2, which has to count for something.
Be sure to check out ‘The Lonely Ones’ on his Myspace page, too. It’s catchy as hell.

The world’s lamest “holiday” is approaching, and as you can tell, I’m not a big Valentine’s Day fan. So I have decided to protest this Hallmark holiday with the most un-Hallmark mix I could devise.
Feel free to throw on these R-rated classics as you light up the fireplace, uncork the wine and settle down with your special someone. If she doesn’t storm out in disgust or slap you in the face, you know you’ve got a real keeper.
If you are a feminist, I hope you have a sense of humor.

PJ’s not for everyone but I like most of his shit. I kinda like what they do with the Prince sample on this track. Anyway, check it out, let me know what you think.
And, if you’ve never seen Pigeon John do the pigeon, I suggest you check it out. Probably the funniest thing I’ve ever seen at a hip-hop show.

After a long Tuesday, I rode home and wanted nothing more than to chill out, watch a little ball and listen to a couple new albums that had crossed my path. I decided to flip on the beats as soon as I was in the door and I went straight to this new album I had just downloaded from a group of younguns from Cali. They go by Inverse and the album is So True EP. So true indeed.
I downloaded this because it had Kno of Cunninlynguists helping with some producto, so I knew it would be good. But it is better than good. It is great. And it is completely FREE.
Yes, free. Not downloaded from a torrent free. But artist making their own blog to give it away free. I don’t normally discriminate between degrees of free, but in this case I have to make an exception.
Check their MySpace. Be their friend on Facebook.
And support these cats when they come through your city. These guys are the future. QN5 is really on some next level shit.
Oh, and the Kno track. It is “Goodnight Goodnight”. It is the best song on the album and you won’t believe who the sample is. Maroon 5. No shit. And somehow, it is awesome. Kno is the alchemist.

Cop this now.
Lif’s new LP, entitled “I Heard It Today” drops on Jan. 20. Some of the pre-released tracks are floating around the matrix but Liger Beat is making it easy to hear one of the hot new joints.

The Funky Magnificent Edan is even coming out of hip-hop seclusion to produce a few. Can’t wait for the full drop.
