Possibly Nike’s Best Commercial Ever by Corbet

With the 2010 FIFA World Cup just weeks away, the soccer marketing machines are getting fired up. Nike has really decided to up the ante (as they always do). Directed by Garcia Bernal Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, this “Write The Future” commercial takes a look at the potential futures for many of the upcoming World Cup’s biggest stars. Didier Drogba, Fabian Cannavaro, Wayne Rooney, Frank Ribery, Christiano Ronaldo, Landon Donovan and even Ronaldinho (who didn’t make Brazil’s squad) all make appearances along with Roger Federer, Kobe Bryant and Homer Simpson.

My favourite part is when Wayne Rooney gives possession to the dreaded Frenchman Ribery and then is instantly shown his potential future, which shows Britain in full-on hooligan mode, Rooney getting lambasted in the papers and eventually living like a true chav in a dirty trailer park.  Awesome stuff from the Nike Football geniuses.

Was watching the Cavs-Celtics game tonight when this local marketing masterpiece came on. I didn’t think it would be on YouTube but it was… with a whopping 49 views. This commercial is amazing.

There is even a Punjabi version!

30th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Amazing Marathon of Hope by Corbet

On April 12, 1980, a 21-year-old dipped his prosthetic limb into the chilly water off Newfoundland and set off on one of the greatest endeavors any Canadian has ever undertaken. Terrance Stanley Fox had lost his leg three years earlier to bone cancer and he was determined to help make a difference. He decided to run across our huge country from Newfoundland to the shores of British Columbia in an effort to raise $24 million dollars for cancer research (a dollar for every Canadian citizen at the time). His effort captivated our nation, inspired countless people of all abilities and gave everyone who was interested a real glimpse into the power of the human spirit.

Unfortunately, Terry was unable to finish his momentous journey, having to end his marathon just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario after 143 days of consecutive marathons, or 5,280 total kilometres. While his run did not make it to its conclusion, the momentum he built allowed him to reach his fund-raising goal by the end of 1980, the same year Terry was awarded the Lou Marsh Award as Canada’s Athlete of the Year. He had cast such a large spotlight on his dreaded disease and had united an entire country that he was as revered on school playgrounds as hockey legends Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr or a young Wayne Gretzky. Then, as quickly as he came into our Country’s collective consciousness, he was gone. On June 28, 1981 Terry fell into a coma and died with his family at his side. His funeral was broadcast across Canada and the entire country participated in an unofficial day of  mourning. Our greatest sporting hero was gone…

But not forgotten. Terry’s legacy is as unbelievable as was his relentless determination. He continues to be regarded as one of our Country’s greatest heroes and the Terry Fox Foundation has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research over the past 30 years. He has 14 schools named after him, countless roads, parks and trails, even a mountain and a ship in the Canadian Navy. Adidas even re-released 6,500 pairs of his iconic sneakers in 2005 to help raise over half a million. In 2010, his yearly Marathon of Hope is the single-biggest one day fundraiser for cancer research in the world. Fellow Lou Marsh Award winner and perhaps Canada’s second greatest athlete ever, Steve Nash, grew up idolizing Terry and has directed a documentary for ESPN’s 30 for 30 film series titled Into the Wind that will look into Terry’s journey and the impact he had on so many Canadians. The release date hasn’t been finalized but the film should be out this spring.

Let’s all take the time today to remember the story of one of the bravest Canadians of all-time and to remember everything that he stood for. We have all lost someone close to us to cancer and it is with the courage of all those battling or who have battled the disease that we can work together to someday eliminate it.

You were the man Terry and R&S salutes you!

New Tiger Woods Nike Commercial: Earl and Tiger by Corbet

Now I know Tiger-mania has been off the chains and that it will only get worse with the Master’s starting tomorrow. But Nike has released the first new TW commercial since he got busted for banging more hoes than an angry gardener. It will start airing on ESPN tonight.

What do you think? I think Eldrick has some serious PR work to do but this commercial might be the best PR move he has made so far. He looks somber and almost broken. And he’s being scolded by his dead father. Rough. But maybe the most real look we have ever had at El Tigre. Once again the Swoosh comes to the rescue.

Props to Team Tiger on this one, they finally got something right.

Eclectic Method beat up that beat with “The Jersey Shore Remixed” by Corbet

I’ve featured the Eclectic Method on R&S before (here and here). But they’ve done it again with “The Jersey Shore Remixed”. This is awesome and is actually a pretty good recap of the entire series.

I want the Tiger Woods Press Conference Remixed next.

Stevie Wonder gets PunchDub with Tracy Morgan by Corbet

In one of the best Super Bowl spots from this past weekend, VW unveiled their take on the classic road trip game “Red punch-buggy, no returns”. It is pretty much standard fare until the end, when cameos from Tracy Morgan and the legendary Stevie Wonder kick it up a notch. A red VW drives by and Stevie gives Tracy a good punch. Laughs and jokes ensue. But after I watched the commercial, I noticed a link to another video, purporting to know how Stevie saw the red VW. I had to watch.

No, Stevie didn’t get bionic eyes. He actually uses a device that he can touch up against objects and it will tell him what color that object is. He even touches it to a car and it blurts out “red”. Pretty cool stuff.

Working to improve the lives of those with disabilities is one of Stevie’s greatest crusades and makes him so much more than just a legendary, one-of-a-kind artist. You can read more about one of our greatest philanthropists and his work as a UN Messenger of Peace here.

Top 5 Peyton Manning Commercials by Corbet

With the Super Bowl mere hours away, I have decided to go a little Nostradamas and predict that Peyton Manning will lead the Colts to their second Super Bowl in four years. I know, it’s not exactly picking Buster Douglas to knock out Iron Mike, but how could you ever bet against the laser, rocket arm of #18?

And on this holiest day of commercials, doesn’t it make karmic sense that the football player who holds the all-time record for commercial appearances elevates his game to another level in hopes of a coveted Disneyworld spot and a new deal to replace Tiger Woods in those stupid Gillette ads with Roger Federer and Derek Jeter? I think so.

In honour of Peyton’s inevitable Super Bowl MVP, Rhymin & Stealin takes a look at the Top 5 Peyton Manning Commercials:

5) Gatorade – “Peyton Manning Action Toy”

This one is worth it just for the awesome ’80s style cartoon action song. “Playing all day, yeeeaah!”. This probably isn’t the 5th best Peyton commercial, but I didn’t want the list to just be MasterCard and Sprint ads. This can claim the fifth spot almost on wackiness alone.

4) ESPN – “Peyton picking on Eli”

Peyton and Eli are commercial gold when together (see #3 on this list). The look they both give Archie when he shoots them a disapproving glance and Peyton’s final heel kick make this a gem, especially when you can tell Peyton really kicked Eli good. That’s the type of commercial realism that can only happen when you cast actual siblings.

3) Oreo – “Mannings vs. Trumps”

Eli is back, and the Super Manning Bros. are joined by The Donald and his doppleganger, Darrell Hammond in a battle of the DSRL (Double Stuff Racing League). This is one of the funniest Manning commercials, with Peyton busting out some classic one-liners (and getting hit with a great “Johnny Touchdown” blast from Hammond). I lost it when I first heard Peyton growl “How’s that feel… Donnie?”. This commercial is hot off the press and it shows that #18 is not losing any comedic steam.

2) Sprint – “Laser Rocket Arm”

The wig and the fake moustcahe would have been enough. But the line “If you like 6’5″, 230 lbs. quarterback’s with a laser, rocket arm” is pure gold. An absolute classic.

Sprint also had another cool Peyton commercial, “Manning’s Mind”.

1) MasterCard – “Supporting Your Team”

Most of Peyton’s best commercial work has been for MasterCard. He had his Priceless Pep Talks, World MasterCard and a myriad of other Priceless gems. But the “Supporting Your Team” series are the best. The squeal of the barista and Peyton telling him to “rub some dirt on it”, along with Peyton’s encouragement to the movers (“They’re not yelling ‘Boo’, they’re yelling ‘Moo-vers’”) launch this into the pantheon of great athlete commercials. View the two other commercials in this series here and here.

Jersey Shore Dudes Get Crunk by Corbet

I will be the first to admit that I love the Jersey Shore. Can’t miss television. Check this video of the Jersey Shore proto-guidos, Vinnie, DJ Pauly D, Ronnie and The Situation, getting their gangsta groove on while dancing and Jerzing out to some terrible rap music courtesy of some cat named Dorrough. Much like the show, it’s hard to look away. And don’t forget about JWoww.

Is it just me, but are Ronnie and Vinnie both genuinely funny guys?

Tommy Lee Jones Built the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids? by Corbet

I had no idea that TLJ was such an accomplished builder. Also good to see he can still get paying work after “Man of the House“.

Spotted at BoingBoing

But seriously, is there any type of commercial better than a Japanese celebrity commercial? I think not.

Exhibit A: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

TV Show of the Decade: The Wire by Corbet

The ’00s had some great TV shows (Mad Men, Sopranos, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm to name a few), but for me one show stood head and shoulders above them all. HBO’s The Wire, which was created by former Baltimore police reporter David Simon, took an in-depth and true-to-life look at the inner city struggle of one of America’s most notorious cities, Baltimore, Maryland. With hyper-realism, an unbelievable job of casting and some of the best writing television has ever seen, The Wire became an instant cult favourite. Anyone who has watched all 5 seasons knows it is all that is good when it comes to TV. For those that slept, use some of those Christmas dollars to pick up the entire series on DVD for only $150.

As Senator Clay Davis would say, “Sheeeeeit“.

Kobe and Lebron Nike Puppets Are Back! by Corbet

Nike has brought back their hilarious Kobe and Lebron puppets, no doubt dreaming of a Cavs-Lakers Finals that would cause Phil Knight’s head to explode.

“I got two words for you: King of the Jungle.”

And for those scoring at home, Kobe is leading the MVP race this year, looking to reclaim it from LBJ. If Kobe keeps hitting insane buzzer beaters and Lebron keeps losing to the Grizz, the Black Mamba will be adding to his trophy case this offseason.

Hard Knocks Ochocinco Remix by Corbet

Nobody thought the Cincinnati Bengals would lead their division this late in the season, and a big reason has been the inspired play of Chad Ochocinco. Along with Cedric Benson, 85 has been instrumental in the Bengals success (and single-handedly keeping my fantasy football team alive). In the preseason, HBO filmed Bengals camp for their show Hard Knocks. While the show in itself is great, editing out everyone else except the former Chad Johnson is a glorious and ingenious move. Child please.

Top 5 Muppet Music Videos by Corbet

The Muppets are burning up the internet right now, and with good reason. The Muppet “Bohemian Rhapsody” is amazing, with Gonzo, Animal, Beaker, Miss Piggy and crew straight killing it. But this isn’t the first time Jim Henson’s creations have taken to song, and R&S is here to recap the greatest moments in Muppet musical history. Without further ado, we bring you the 5 Greatest Muppet Music Videos.

5) Beaker – Ode to Joy

Beaker is one of my favourite all-time Muppet characters, so I had to feature him on the list. Who knew that someone who was so vocally challenged would be such an accomplished musician?

Honourable Mention: Beaker singing “Yellow” by Coldplay

And more Beaker: singing “Habanera”

Update: Another forgotten gem, Beaker singing “Feelings”

4) Grover and Stevie Wonder

Stevie and Grover… what else is there to say. Two 20th century icons team up… puts the Jay-Z R. Kelly collabo to shame.

Honourable Mention: Cab Calloway sings “Hi De Ho Man” with the Muppets

3) All Through the Night – Escort

Classic music video right here. Brooklyn, NY electro outfit Escort hit pay dirt with this one. Great track too.

Honourable Mention: Cookie Monster raps about “Healthy Food”

2) Bohemian Rhapsody

The gangs all here, and in sparkling HD no less. The highlight for me is Beaker at the 2:02 mark, I almost fell out my chair the first time I saw it. A classic song, a great interpretation. For comparison, check out the Queen original here. And don’t forget Wayne & Garth.

1) Ernie & Bert – Ante Up

M.O.P. have never sounded or looked better. This really should be the official music video for this all-time club banger.

A Tribute to Bill Walton by Corbet

Today is truly a sad day for basketball fans, aspiring announcers, UCLA alumni, hippies, dead heads and red heads. Due to constant back issues that have required multiple surgeries, kept him from the broadcasting booth over the past couple seasons and generally cause him to walk like Frankenstein, Bill Walton has decided to retire from ESPN and broadcasting all together. Bill had this to say, in typical Bill Walton-speak:

“As I return after a grueling multi-year, life-threatening, life-changing ordeal with back problems, it is time to dedicate the rest of my life to service” (via Sports Business Daily)

I am a huge Bill Walton fan. His hyperbole and ability to compare basketball with renaissance art is unparalleled. You could always count on Bill to say something that would make you laugh, scratch your head or both, and no one can knock him for his unbelievable contribution to the game as one of the most prolific and skilled big men ever. Much like we did for John Madden upon his retirement, R&S has put together some of the best clips we could find featuring Big Red. Enjoy.

The Greatest Fantasy-Themed Rap Songs of All-Time by Corbet

Meet Klenginem, Klingon’s version of Eminem and King of all dorks. I don’t even know what to think right now. I knew that some Trekkie dorks out there spoke Klingon, just like Hobbit uber-fans are known to converse in Elvish. But Klingonese rappers? This takes the cake.

While Klenginem might be the worst musical monstrosity to come out of Germany since David Hasslehoff, it does give R&S a chance to reflect on some great Fantasy-themed raps, which are thankfully spat in English. Follow us as we get our nerd on.

Flight of the Conchords – “Frodo”

Lazy Sunday (Narnia Rap)

Star Wars Gangsta Rap

WarCraft: The Rap

We tried, but it looks like there are only 4 cool Fantasy-themed raps in existence. Know of some others? Hit us up in the comments.

Tyson and Holyfield to hug it out on Oprah; Super Six Starts Saturday by Corbet

As many of you probably heard, Iron Mike was on Oprah earlier this week. He talked about all the things you’d expect Oprah to ask him about: Robin Givens, the tragic death of his infant daughter, his legal/personal struggles and chomping Evander Holyfield’s ear. I watched most of the interview, and thought Mike was looking/acting mighty fragile.

For a great recap of the Oprah interview, please read the thoughtful and extremely well-written post done up by Dave Larzelere over on The Rumble. Great stuff from a top-notch boxing blog. Read Dave’s article here.

One of the nuggets gleamed from Oprah’s interview was that Tyson and Holyfield haven’t really spoken since The Bite, and Mike admitted he was not truly sorry when he initially apologized right after the fight. Well, Oprah didn’t become the Queen of the World by letting opportunity pass her by, so she did what O does and now… this Friday… Tyson AND Holyfield will sit down with the Mighty O to talk ears, lost fortunes and more ears. Set those Tivo’s.

After getting emotional watching Oprah, all you boxing heads best be watching the Super Six this weekend. Carl Froch vs Andre Dirrell and Jermaine Taylor vs Arthur Abraham get the middleweight super tournament started Saturday on Showtime and it should be some great action. I really think this sort of tournament is the kind of stuff boxing needs to do more off. It increases the quality of the card (taking a page from the UFC’s book), highlights a strong division and puts six of the top middleweights into a fair battle for 168 lb supremacy. But Don King is getting paid off of it, so it’s not all good. Learn more about the Super Six here.

If you like the Tyson image above, check out Nick Gentry‘s photostream on Flikr. Excellent stuff.

R.I.P. “Captain” Lou Albano by Corbet

2009 has been a rough year. MJ, Billy Mays, Roc Raida, Farrah Fawcett, The Swayze Express, John Hughes, Les Paul, David Carradine, Ed McMahon, Dom DeLuise, Bea Arthur, Ricardo Montalban and now… “Captain” Lou Albano. Terrible. If “Mean” Gene Okerlund and Mister Fuji go to the “big squared-circle in the sky” before the year is out, I’m gonna lose it.

Used to love Lou Albano back in the day. I remember collecting my WWF Sticker Book and always getting Albano, and he was a key part of the Saturday morning ritual Rock ‘N Wrestling from back in the day. Because of him, one of my life goals is to have a goatee that’s long enough that I can put colored elastic bands in it. I think Drew Gooden has already checked it off his life goal list…

As a final tribute to Captain Lou, check out this hilarious PSA he did back in the day, when he was also known as Mario on the terrible Mario Bros. TV show. And always remember Cap’s words:

If you do drugs, go to hell before you die

T.O. gets dissed by Joanna Krupa on The Superstars by Corbet

I Tivo’d the first episode of The Superstars tonight, just to see what sort of shenanigans T.O. got up to. And he didn’t disappoint.

His supermodel partner, Joanna Krupa, got fed up with Terrell’s ineptitude on a kayak and then lost it on him when he got stuck on the obstacle course. He was easily the softest pro athlete on the show, and Krupa got off a few great blasts on 81. She wondered “what he got paid millions for”, told him to “shut up” and even blasted him with a “You made the NFL? So what”. Classic.

Update: Joanna Krupa on the cover of August Maxim. Oooh la la.

Steve Nash on Letterman by Corbet

Nasty is the best. The best part is when he asks Beetlejuice Jeff Van Gundy if his brother, Ron Jeremy Stan Van Gundy ever got laid in high school.

Zach Morris on Jimmy Fallon by Corbet

Sweet Jesus, this is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on Jimmy Fallon’s show. MPG (Marc-Paul Gosselaar) just kills it, and his rendition of “Friends Forever” with The Roots almost brought a tear to my eye.

If you were a Saved By The Bell fan like me, click here to sigh Jimmy’s petition for a Saved By The Bell reunion. Word is Screetch is holding out, guess he’s too busy doing absolutely nothing.

Pearl Jam on Conan by Corbet

To anyone who missed Conan’s Tonight Show debut last night, ’90s Rock gods Pearl Jam unveiled a new song of their upcoming album. It’s a pretty heavy track by PJ standards but it sure has me excited for their album tentatively titled Backspacer. For some rather worthless trivia, Backspacer is the name of a turtle that Pearl Jam has sponsored in the Great Turtle Race, a leatherback turtle conservation project spearheaded by National Geographic.

Brendan O’Brien is set to produce the album, which is huge news because he produced three of Pearl Jam’s earlier albums: Vs., Vitalogy and Yield. He also produced Mirror Ball, which was a collab between Pearl Jam and Neil Young.

Check for the album in September, it will be available on Pearl Jam’s website and low-end Target stores.
